Client Advocacy

SAWERA advocates work with our clients to safety plan, secure resources and support, and identify and achieve their long- and short-term goals.  We support clients through regular telephone and in-person contact, accompaniment to court and other legal appointments, assistance in filling out and filing documents such as restraining orders, employment applications, and immigration papers, and one-on-one life-skills training uniquely suited to each client’s needs. We also offer a culturally-sensitive support group for clients, with free childcare and help with transportation if needed. For children of clients we offer the SAWERA Kid's Club program that includes fun outings and group activities for the kids, culturally-sensitive counselors, and mentoring and outreach.

Kids Club

Under the umbrella of SAWERA, the SAWERA Kids Club focuses on assisting the children of domestic violence victims. Often children are most affected by the turmoil and uncertainty of a troubled home life. The Kids Club encompasses various programs including Play Therapy, Childcare, Mentoring, Outreach and Events.

The Kids Club is in need of volunteers to help out in various capacities. Volunteers can get involved with mentoring a child, helping during childcare sessions, conducting presentations on DV and children to the public and helping with administrative details. DV Support Group

SAWERA domestic violence (DV) support group is the only support group to be offered in the greater Portland area for battered SA women. While these women attend the group, their children go to an adjacent playroom and enjoy self-esteem building activities with a culturally sensitive childcare provider.

We understand that SA women will not come forward for support in a group whose cultural norms are completely distinct from their own. Their shame at publicly revealing their circumstances, hesitancy to seek help from "outsiders" and the very real fear of deportation are just some of the factors that isolate this silent minority.

Please contact our DV Program Coordinator at (503) 641-2425 for more information.
